This register shows 12 generations from Robert Barton of Lancashire.

In May 1856, William Barton (1807-1856) left England for America, arriving in Boston, Massachusetts 5 weeks later in June. With him was his wife, Mary Ann (Taylor) Barton, their three children, (son) Barton (1851-1856), Frances "Fannie" Barton (1852-1919), and Elizabeth Barton (1855-1856). Also, William's daughter from his first wife (deceased), Mary Ann Barton (1842-1914).  They made their way across the country to Iowa City, Iowa. On the way, their daughter Elizabeth died. On July 28, 1856, they accompanied more than 500 other pioneers with the Martin Handcart Company in the trek across the plains from Iowa City to Salt Lake City, Utah. An early winter set in while they were en route. The bitter cold slowed the company's progress and weakened many of the pioneers, of whom more than 100 died along the way. The trek was later named the Martin Handcart Disaster.  William Barton and his son both died before reaching Utah.  Mary Ann (Taylor) Barton and her step-daughter, Mary Ann Barton, arrived in Salt Lake City on November 30, 1856.
