    This congregation had it's beginning with the Leathermans from Hagerstown MD in 1784 and the Arnolds from near Frederick MD in about 1785.
    Daniel Leatherman was b. 1710 in Germany, moved to America in 1730, then to MD in 1757. He was the founder of the Brethren Church in MD. His son, Nicholas and his wife and small child, Abraham, moved to Patterson Creek, now between Headsville and Burlington, in 1784. Abraham is buried in the Biser Cemetery.

    Allegheny Passage, Bittinger pg 157-159 offers other theories from other researchers regarding the parentage of Nicholas Leatheman. In 1763 at least THREE Nicholas Leathermans were known.

    He was taxed at Shenandoah County in 1782 with 2 horses and 7 cattle next to David Stover (son of Daniel) with 2 horses and 16 cattle and near Ulrich Stover with 2 horses and 7 cattle. He was taxed at Shenandoah County in 1783 next to Ulrich Stover and they each had 2 horses and 5 cattle and near David Stover (son of Daniel) with 4 horses and 16 cattle. He was taxed there in 1784 with 2 horses and 4 cattle next to Ulrich Stover with 2 horses and 3 cattle. He was gone by 1785 but shows up on the next list at Hampshire County, Virginia that same year. He died at Hampshire County in 1806 and he signed his name “Daniel Stauffer” in German script. In all records in Shenandoah and Hampshire he was always called Daniel Stover.

    16 Mar 1773. Daniel's mother's estate in Germany was settled. Daniel was living is Pennsylvania. 1775-1777 accounts of mother's estate; Daniel was overpaid from his father's estate, so his younger brother Jacob of Bolanerhof had to reimburse their step-father on Daniel's behalf.

    Most of the Virginia Mennonites who came in 1773-1820 came from Montgomery, Lancaster, and York counties, Pennsylvania. The period 1820-1830 was the time of organization of the oldest existing continuous congregations in Rockingham and Augusta counties.

    Hampshire Co VA was created in 1754 from parts of Frederick and Augusta Counties. It's the state's oldest county.
    Hardy County WV was created from Hampshire County in 1786.
