Barton, Joseph Owen, 1953
Barton, Joseph Owen, 1953
Notable Death: 8 Feb 1953, Age: 54, Cedar City, Iron County, Utah. Death Certificate: Death from skull fracture, alleged assault. News article in the Post Register (Idaho Falls, ID), dated Feb 9, 1953, said: Cedar City, Utah - Police held Zane Hamblin, 25, in jail here Monday after the death of a 54-year-old custodian. Joseph Owen Barton, who served as custodian at both the Cedar City Public Library and the First Ward Chapel of the Later-Day Saints Church here, died Sunday, several hours after he was injured. Police said testimony at an inquest showed Hamblin struck Barton when the latter protested at the younger man's slapping of a woman tavern owner. They said testimony at the inquest showed this series of events: Barton was walking home from the library. He passed in front of Ted's Place just as the tavern owner, Mrs. Nancy Farnsworth, was attempting to eject Hamblin. Witnesses said Hamblin slapped the woman and Barton said, "That is no way to treat a lady." Winesses said Hamblin struck Barton and the latter fell to the sidewalk, hitting his head. Before Barton's death, Hamblin was arrested on a charge of assault and battery. Officers said they were investigating to determine whether a new charge would be filed. Another news article in the Ogden Standard Examiner on Feb 10, 1953, stated: Cedar City - Zane Hamblin, 25, of Cedar City, has been charged with voluntary manslaughter in the death of Joseph O. Barton, 54, also of Cedar City, who died of a fractured skull Sunday. He allegedly was knocked to the pavement by Hamblin Saturday night, suffering the fatal injury.
