- Ref: A History of the Church of the Brethren WV 1945 pg 39.
This congregation had it's beginning with the Leathermans from Hagerstown MD in 1784 and the Arnolds from near Frederick MD in about 1785.
Daniel Leatherman was b. 1710 in Germany, moved to America in 1730, then to MD in 1757. He was the founder of the Brethren Church in MD. His son, Nicholas and his wife and small child, Abraham, moved to Patterson Creek, now between Headsville and Burlington, in 1784. Abraham is buried in the Biser Cemetery.
Allegheny Passage, Bittinger pg 157-159 offers other theories from other researchers regarding the parentage of Nicholas Leatheman. In 1763 at least THREE Nicholas Leathermans were known.
