Lowe Family of St. Clair and Washington Counties, IllinoisPosted by: John Sheftall (ID *****5853)Date: November 20, 2011 at 11:17:59 of 6509
I am currently researching the Lowe families of St. Clair and Washington Counties, Ill. I have had no opportunity yet to delve into the on-site research I want to do both in Illinois and Tennessee. Hopefully someone else has already done some of this work and I certainly don’t want to reinvent the wheel!

Here is an outline of my connection, and what information I think I know so far:

I descend from David Wilkerson Lowe, born 1807 in Blount Co., Tenn., who I believe is a previously unreported son of David Lowe Sr., born of a first wife. John Lowe (b. 1790/1) and George Lowe Jr. (b. 1793/4) were older sons of David and his first wife. This first David Lowe and his family moved to St. Clair Co., Ill, from Tenn. prior to the 1820 census. Two years later, David remarried Mrs. Esther Barton Nichols, a widow with possibly four Nichols children. She and David Lowe then had a son of their own, Asa H. Lowe, b. 1824/25.

David Wilkerson Lowe left St. Clair Co., Ill., as a young man and arrived in Lawrence Co., Arkansas, single but having already received his inheritance (David Lowe died in 1826) and beautifully educated. He was prominent in northeast Arkansas in the 1830s, 40s and 50s – serving as sheriff, county clerk and judge of Lawrence Co., president of a local bank, a successful planter, and president of a male college/academy. He settled in Batesville, Independence Co., Ark., and died there in 1857. Several of his sons were lawyers, another was State Auditor just before the Civil War. Four of his sons fought in the Confederate Army!

I am trying to find out anything I can about the Lowes in St. Clair and Washington Counties, to better document David W. Lowe’s parentage and also his siblings, nieces/nephews, etc.

What I have pieced together so far is that the first David Lowe, by first wife, had John (b. 1790/1; m. Nancy Agnes Green, 1811, Blount Co., Ten.; d. 1850-60, St. Clair Co., Ill), “Dr.” George (b. 1793/4; m. Nancy Whittenberg, 1816, Blount Co.; d. about 1879, Washington Co., Ill.); William (an “idiot”), b. 1799/1800, Tenn.; and David Wilkerson (b. 1807, Tenn.) According to 1820 census, there were three other sons – one b. 1802/4; one b. 1804/10; and another b. 1804/10, so I am guessing there were two other boys between William and David W., and another boy younger than David W. No clue as to these names or anything about them. None appear to be living with their stepmother Esther Lowe in 1830 census, St. Clair Co. – but we know that David W. was already in Arkansas, so the others may have died or scattered as well.

      John Lowe and Nancy Green had 7 children: Anna P., b. 1812; m. Zeno Scott; Elizabeth M., b. 1814, m. James S. White; George Franklin, b. 1816, m. Martha Ann Phillips; Samuel Thomas, b. 1822, m. Margaret Elizabeth Arnold; Phebe Barton, b. 1834/35, m. John P. Major; Mary P., b. 1827/28, m. Charles Wakefield, and Catherine N., b. 1830, m. Warren Williams Stewart and Absolom Dunning.

John and Nancy Lowe were alive in Lebanon Township in 1850 census, but can’t find after that. Assume they both died during that decade. In St. Clair Co.? Buried?

George Lowe and Nancy Whittenberg had 5 children: Sarah Whittenberg, b. 1817, m. Josiah Dennis and Marcus Faulkner; Mary A. T. Lowe, b. 1819/20, m. David W. Wittenberg; David W., b. 1822/23, m. Mary Ann Nelson; Henry Lafayette, b. 1824, m. Sarah Ann Smith; Elizabeth R. Lowe, b. 1824, m. Samuel Edward Hatcher.

Nancy died in 1857 in Richview Township and George Lowe remarried Mrs. Mary Railey that same year. He was still alive to subscribe to the Washington Co. history in 1879, but doesn’t appear to be in the 1880 census. Assume he died in Washington Co., but when and where buried? Perhaps in Richview Cemetery?

I believe that David Lowe Sr. had a brother, George Lowe Sr., who also immigrated from Blount Co., Tenn., to Washington Co., Ill, although he does not seem to be there by the 1820 census. His existence would explain why the 1820 census of St. Clair Co., Ill, lists David Lowe “Sr” and George Lowe “Jr.” I am certain they were father and son, but just to confuse things further, George Sr. (David Sr.’s brother) seems to have had a son, David Lowe (who would be the Jr.) He is the “idiot” living with Rachel Lowe and her husband, John White, in Washington Co. in 1850 and 1860. So…. George Sr. would seem to have had at least two children: David Jr., b. 1799/1800, and Rachel, b. 1803. George Sr. appears to be enumerated in both 1830 and 1840 in the John White household.

OK, that’s the outline of what I know. Hopefully there is someone else researching these families who can help me! Any confirmation and/or disagreement with any of the above would be wonderful. Especially interested in places where any of these folks are buried – as well as further documentation of death dates for the Lowes in Illinois – and other clues from documents as to the existence of George Lowe Sr. and the names or his and David Sr.’s wives, as well as any documentation or information about their children, especially David Sr.’s children. I have copies of his estate records from St. Clair Co. (1825+) but what I have does not list heirs, only names George Lowe as his administrator and shows that John Lowe, George Lowe, and Esther Lowe all bought articles at his administrator’s sale. The other sons such as my David Wilkerson would not have been of age to purchase. Perhaps there are some guardianship records on them.

In short, I would love to exchange information and will appreciate anything anyone can pass along.
