    Subject: Nancy Hunter born abt.1770
    Dear Mr. Barton,
I am writing you to hopefully help solve some Hunter Family geneology lines. My husband, Burke Isaacson 's great, great, grandmother is Jane Hunter, daughter of James Hunter and Margaret Phipps. Jane married NicholsRobertson 1 Janujary 1833 in St. Clair, Illinois (she was his 2ndwife) . As a widow with 6 sons she immigrated to Utah in 1852 in theCaptain Lewis Brunsons company of Saints, setttling in Fountain Green,Sanpete, Utah. Her son Jasper Robertson with his wife and familypioneered the Castle Valley are in 1880 and served as Bishop in Orangeville, where he died in 1916. His mother Jane must have moved to Orangeville inher reclining years, as well, as she is buried in the OrangevilleCemetery. Anyway, getting to the point of Nancy Hunter. ThisJasper Hunter, while Bishop of Orangeville, was asked to participate in aGenealogical Questionnaire for the LDS Church relating to Utah Families. I found this Questionnaire which he filled out on Microfilm: 1592751, Item 4,#72 of the Cummings Collection of Genealogical Questionaires Relating to UtahFamilies submitted in 1945. Following is Jasper's response:
    Father: Nichols Robertson
    Born: Jan 8, 1800

Christian names of brothers and sisters: Edward Robertson,Elizabeth Robertson, Rosa Robertson, and Sarah Robertson

    Mother: Jane Hunter
    Born : Aug. 7, 1809
    Place: Rockingham County, North Carolina

Christian names of brothers and sisters: Joseph, James, Hardy,John and William, Marriam, Patsey, Peggy, Lydia and Polley

Mothers Father: James Hunter\par Mothers Mother: Margaret Phips or Fipps

" I think my GranParents were born in the Carolinas or inTennessee. Father had two half-brothers named George Robertson and RileyRobertson, also a half-sister Emma Jane Robertson. Father was married toa woman by the name of Sarah Crocker before his marriage with my mother.
Mothers father had two brothers named respectabely John andSamuel Hunter, also three sisters named Mariam, Nancy and Nellie."
Note: This was written in Jaspers own handwriting.

I do not know if this is correct. Perhaps this Nancy is the Nancy whomarried William Barton. I am confused, at this point because on theInternet I found articles regarding a James Hunter, Regulator in North Carolinamarried to Mary Walker, whose father was Samuel Walker. This Samuel Walkernames in his will probated 1783 his son-in-law James Hunter and son-in-lawRobert Fields, as his executors. The Dictionary of North Carolinabiography, Vo. 3 by William Stevens Powell suggest that this Hunter's fivechildren were Martha (m. Aaron Hill), Samuel 9m.Lydia Deviney), Marian (m.Alexander Strain), Mary (m. William Strayhorn), and James Jr. (m. MargaretPhipps). James Jr. and Samuel later moved to Clinton County, Illinois, whereas their descendants moved to Texas and the far West.

The Query comes with what Jasper wrote in his questionnaire regarding the twosisters Nancy and Nellie. Is Nancy and Nellie a nickname for Martha andMary. I do not think so. My thinking is that Jasper is correct andthe writings of William S. Powell is not correct. How does onedetermine which is correct??????Anyway, I thought you might be interested inthis Questionnaire of Jasper Hunter. A reply would greatly beappreciated, as I have been working many months now on this Hunter Line tryingto decipher out the correct information. Respectfully, Sonja Isaacson (email address: sisaacson@q.com)

Subject: RE: Nancy Hunter born abt.1770

    David,
Thanks for your reply. I am still pondering this Hunter Family Line. Havefound from other family members, particularly the Lunceford family;WilliamLunceford married Rosie Robertson 4 January 1821 in St. Clair, Illinois, whoseemingly have done more research than I have. There records indicatethat the 3 children mentioned by Jasper as being his fathers step-syblings,were instead his children by his wife Sarah Crocker. The daughter's name wasMelissa Jane, not Emma Jane, and she died, in infancy, the two boysGeorge and Riley lived. Not sure if they died in teens or later, or what.George's birth is calculated at 1824, Melissa Jane ca 1827, and Riley ca at1831. Sarah possibly died after Riley was born or shortly before 1833,when Nichols married Jane Hunter. All these three children were born inSt. Clair, Illinois. I think that this information is most likely morecorrect, than these three children being Nichols step-syblings. With thisinformation and the further study of James Hunter being the Regulator, andwith information from another relative, Cheryl Doty, whose roots stem fromMariam Hunter who married Alexander Strain, I am leaning toward the informationfrom Jasper regarding Nancy and Nellie being James Hunter's sisters as notcorrect. But, it is possible that they could have been cousins, andJasper's memory confused at the time he filled out this questionnaire. Inreading the History of the Regulators, and seeing names who were part of thatmovement familiar to names in Jane Hunters family, such as Phipps, I aminclined to feel that James Hunter who married Mary Walker is the James Hunterwho was the Regulator. I hope you keep up your search on this line, andwill let me know what you find, and what you think about thisinformation. I still think that Nancy and Nellie fit in somewhere in thisJames Hunter Line, but just don't know where! Sincerely yours, Sonja
